Should Women Be in the Military?
There are women serving in the military and have been for a while. When you break the question down, however, you can see that it's not as simple as you might think. For example, the question of the day currently is whether women should be allowed to fulfill combat roles in the military while serving. If you look around the world, different countries have different ways of dealing with women in the military.
A Changing American Military
Back in the 1980s, the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) did a study that showed a lot of Americans supported women in the military - even in combat roles. In the report, 57% of people said they were okay with a woman being a "crew member on combat ship" while 94% said they were fine with women being a nurse in a combat zone. There's quite a bit of difference between the numbers, but the low one may be surprising to you.
Over the last few decades, not many new studies have been done to see how American's feel about women in the military. If a poll was done, it would probably show that more people support women in the military - in a wide range of roles. Until those studies are done, however, it is up to the American citizens to talk about the
issue themselves. In the modern world, it's a very serious issue that should be discussed. Since the US military went to an all volunteer force after 1973, the number of women in the military has been rising.
Women in Combat Roles
Whether it is working on a war ship or flying a jet or bomber over enemy territory, should women be handling instruments of destruction? Does it matter if the United States is at war or not? These are valid questions that need to be answered as the American military continues to be the dominant force around the world in the 21st century. The first step is to get people talking about the issue by asking the tough questions. Only then will the answers begin to appear.
If you believe women should be in the military or not, you should be discussing the issue with the people around you. While you don't want to be a pest, if you can find a group of like minded individuals who like to discuss military issues, you can give your opinion and feel better about doing your part to support the troops.
K. Paul Mallasch is the publisher of and a great social network for those in the military and those who support the troops. You can look at a lot of great military pictures, and get involved in discussions based on topics like women in the military and many other topics.
